Our Classes - Lower Primary
Meet the Teacher - Mrs Kathryn James
My name is Kathryn James and I'm the Lower Primary teacher here at CPCS. Leading this department is a challenging task, but it is also a rewarding experience as I endeavour to guide these little ones through these early years of their schooling. The years in Lower Primary are key years in helping young people to develop skills of independence and personal responsibility. It's not always an easy task, but it is encouraging to see them make progress during the two years that I have them under my care and instruction.
From an early age, I had a desire to teach little children. In 1994, my family and I were attending Condell Park Bible Church. The school was looking for additional staff at the time, and the Lord opened the door for me to be able to answer the call and join the school teaching staff. After gaining several years of experience, I decided to complete my teaching studies through Morling College. I graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 2011.
I believe that children can learn from an early age that it is our individual responsibility to honour the Lord in every decision of our lives. It is a privilege to be able to have an input into the children's spiritual development and to be able to teach them the simple yet foundational lessons of pleasing God in everything we do and say. It is my prayer for each one of the children that they will remember these truths and that their desire to honour God will carry on through their adolescent and adult years.
About Lower Primary
The Lower Primary department is a composite class of Years 1 and 2. It is a class that reviews and builds upon the literacy and numeracy skills taught in Kindergarten.
The phonics based Reading and Spelling program that began in Kindergarten, ‘Get Reading Right’, continues throughout the next 2 years of schooling. Other literacy materials used include reading materials from Bob Jones University Press and Reading A-Z, a web based program. The literacy program also includes other strands such as grammar, comprehension and written expression.
Along with Mathematics, other subjects include History and Geography, Science, Sport, Music, Visual Art, Bible Devotions and Information Technology.
The classroom has recently been blessed with the installation of an interactive SMARTboard, which has meant that children have an opportunity to be engaged in learning in a new and enjoyable way.
It is the desire of teaching staff within this department to encourage and exhort students to follow after Jesus Christ and to live for Him.
