Our Classes - Kindergarten
Meet the Teacher - Mrs Susan Leys (Head of Primary School)
Hi, my name is Susan Leys and I have been the main Kindegarten teacher here at CPCS for over 20 years. I am thankful to the Lord that He has allowed me to be a part of the ministry of this school from the very first day of the school's operation.
In 1977, I completed my Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Mathematics at Canberra University. My husband, Don, and I felt the Lord's leading back to Condell Park Bible Church, which was my home church in Sydney. It was soon after we returned to Condell Park that the school ministry was started and I was pleased to be able to assist, initially in a teacher's aide capacity. I undertook studies at Condell Park Bible & Teachers' College and completed my Diploma of Christian Education in 1993.
I have had various roles during my time here at CPCS, some administrative and some teaching. Following my early role as a teacher's aide, I functioned as the Pre-Reading teacher for several years, then as a Lower Primary teacher, before taking over the role of Kindergarten teacher. I enjoy working with the little ones and it is a joy to see them continually improving their foundational skills in literacy and numeracy. It is an even greater privilege to be able to have an input into the spiritual lives of the children. Apart from our set Bible Truths times, we have many opportunities to talk as a class about what God expects from us in different situations of work and play. It is a blessing to see them grow academically, physically and spiritually throughout the year.
The academic goal of Kindergarten is to give each child the grounding and skills required in reading, writing and mathematics. At Condell Park Christian School, reading is taught using the Phonics method. We believe this to be the most suitable method of teaching, to give substantial skills, so that each child will be able to gain confidence in reading and spelling. The core curriculum used is the Get Reading Right Learning To Read Program. At times, we also supplement with other textbooks and worksheets. During the morning, Kindergarten complete a variety of English and Mathematics learning tasks, as well as Bible Truths, and during the afternoons Kindergarten undertake classes such as History, Science, Art/Craft, Music and Sport.
